The Effects of Giving on Givers

Did you know that giving is good for you? We know that giving is good for the people we help, but lots of scientific research finds that givers also benefit when they give. Dr. Sara Konrath will share some surprising ways that giving to others can benefits givers, and evidence-based tips on how people can increase their joy of giving.

Dr. Sara Konrath is a social psychologist who directs the Interdisciplinary Program on Empathy and Altruism Research (iPEARlab.org) at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She regularly publishes scientific research on the health and happiness benefits of giving. She also creates and evaluates empathy-building training programs for a variety of groups, including young people, nonprofit professionals, teachers, and doctors. Dr. Konrath writes a popular Psychology Today blog (The Empathy Gap) and is regularly featured in media outlets, including the New York Times, Time Magazine, NPR radio, and BBC news. Her forthcoming book is called Culture of Burnout: American life in an age of increasing expectations. She is currently a Visiting Professor at the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (2020-2021).
