Climate change, sustainability, and international security are inextricably linked. Environmental and climate-related disasters threaten food and water security, drive conflict, and destabilize international security. Global conflict, in turn, threatens international action on climate change while also endangering the environment. A just transition to a more sustainable future must confront the threats that arise from cascading, long-term climate disruptions. In Laudato Si’, Pope Francis challenges fundamental assumptions of the global economy while also calling for renewed international cooperation to care for our common home. The Pope’s deep critique of conventional statecraft offers Notre Dame an opportunity to examine environmental threats and collaborative opportunities from a missional perspective.

Senior climate advisor to the Secretary of Defense Joe Bryan will join the following Notre Dame faculty members to discuss:

• Diane Desierto, Professor of Global Affairs and Law, LLM Faculty Director
• Eugene Gholz, Associate Professor of Political Science
• Debra Javelin, Associate Professor of Political Science
• Roy Scranton, Associate Professor of English; Director of the Environmental Humanities Initiative

The event will take place in Carey Auditorium, Hesburgh Library, and will be followed by a light reception.
