J. Wentzel van Huyssteen is the James I. McCord Professor of Theology and Science Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary and Extraordinary Professor in Theology and Science at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. His areas of special interest are interdisciplinary and philosophical theology, with a special focus on the dialogue between theology and the sciences.

Professor van Huyssteen has published numerous books and articles on interdisciplinary theology. One of his earliest books, Theology and the Justification of Faith: Constructing Theories in Systematic Theology (Eerdmans, 1989), was awarded the Andrew Murray Prize and the Venter Prize for Academic Excellence. William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company has published several of his books including The Shaping of Rationality: Towards Interdisciplinarity in Theology and Science (1999; chosen for the new John Templeton Foundation’s Books of Distinction Program in 2004) and Alone in the World? Human Uniqueness in Science and Theology [the Gifford Lectures, University of Edinburgh] (2004; and Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Germany [2006], Nya Doxa Publishing House, Sweden [2008], and Mockba Publishers, Russia [2014]; listed on 2007 Templeton Books of Distinction). For Alone in the World? Human Uniqueness in Science and Theology, he was named the first recipient of the Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Prize (April 2007).

Among his many edited publications, Dr. van Huyssteen was Editor-in-Chief of the new Encyclopedia for Science and Religion (2003, Macmillan Publishers New York; with N.H. Gregersen, N.R. Howell, and W.J. Wildman). In addition to serving on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Theology and Philosophy, the Nederduits Gereformeerde Teologiese Tydskrif, and the Journal of Theology and Science, he is a member of the editorial board of the Templeton Foundation Press, and co-editor (with Roger Trigg) of Ashgate Press’ Science and Religion Series.

Professor van Huyssteen is an international speaker and a member of several national and international academic societies. He has been a member of the Steering Committee of the Theology and Science Section of the American Academy of Religion since 1992, and he is a recipient of an American Academy of Religion Senior Research Award. He has won three Templeton Awards. He is also a Life Member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, England; a Life Member of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton; and a founding member of the International Society of Science and Religion.
